In Class With Floyd — Bach and Baroque

I’ve posted this before — a few years ago, but I showed it to my Humanities class again last week. The greatness of Bach can never be extolled enough. Even though he’s useless in getting a job, if more people listened to (or just appreciated — not everyone will be a fan of course) Bach, understood his worldview, and thought like him we wouldn’t be anywhere near the looming apocalypse we face today.

Beautiful. Eloquent as a mathematical formula. As poor as I was as child I was rich in what counted most, at least for me. A twopenny trolley ride to a very fine art gallery, a well stocked library and the Royal Scottish Symphony Orchestra – all free. Our school was provided with tickets to the concerts which allowed those students who were interested to have the free seats behind the tympani – a little noisy at times but worth it. I had seen many famous guest soloists and conductors by the time I was fourteen.

Strangely I was the only one of four siblings who was interested in any of these, and all of them had better paying jobs than I.

INFJ, I really enjoy hearing the vignettes from your girlhood across the pond. Thinking ’bout a twopenny trolley ride to another world calms me.

      • Thanks, TCR. Yup, it was another world, and a lovely one in it’s own way.

          “Eloquent as a mathematical formula”

I got to this post late, but when I did I had to show it to my son (a high school freshman) since that video was so doggone cool.

And that inspired me to ask him if he knew what a Mobius strip was, and from there, if he’d ever seen a Klein bottle (and it turns out the closest he’d come to those were “mods” (modifications) on the computer game “Minecraft” called Mobius fuel and a Klein star (an energy storing device)). Which I guess isn’t too bad since the usual cultural reference source for my kids is “The Simpsons”.

As is common in our family, things quickly degenerated from there as I asked him what would happen if he relieved himself into a Klein bottle . . . which I suspect is not the usual end point for civilized discussions engendered by the “Crab Canon”.

    Floyd, I seek clarification re:

    1) Threedonia Amazon Bridge
    2) 3D Tip Jar

First, I have >200 pages of “save till later” in my Amazon cart. If I want to moved something to purchase now cart and/or want to select a new item, how do I ensure it is connected to 3D? Do I start in 3D and then click on Trooper’s book to get to the site and then adjust once there, removing Trooper’s book each time (I’ve already purchased it BTW); or what?

Second, if one were to give credit card info for the tip jar, is the tipper’s identity revelaed to you?

Please let me know. I value the privilege of my citizenship here and hope to proffer my taxes to the city coffers (fancy word for “coffee can”)so that some of the pot holes can be filled and a few statues can be erected in the square.

    Now I’m green!!/???

  • Amazon: click any of the links below. You don’t have to go through Rich’s. I don’t know about transferring books from Wish lists to cart if the listing was prior to our linkage.

PayPal. I don’t know. But if you’re worried I’ll show mine (name) if you show me yours (name). :-)

I’ll do a test run next week with new choices and old. If I have to, I can re-select what is in my “save for later” pile.

And oh sure, the old “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours” trick. I may be from Texas, but I wasn’t born there and it sure a heck wasn’t yesterday. Duh. *o^

I only see links on the side columns here. I’ll click there. -fritz- did not clarify whether or not his pool equipment was already in his cart or not, so I’ll do some shopping this weekend and let you know what I do so you can track it to see if it works. I buy lots of things I absolutely need via Amazon, so y’all might as well benefit. Thanks!!!

The art of abstract thinking codified. Lovely and awesome. I’ll add some Bach to my cart.

A little Bach is always good! What did your students think of it?

I remember playing a crab cannon when I was in college. Though it was written for the snare drum, it was still interesting to play. When I reached the end of the piece, I was required to turn the page upside down, and play it again, from the upper left!

I’ve mentioned this before, but I know we are doomed when I had Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565, he gets his own number system because he wrote so much) and the 20-somethings I mostly work with said deridingly, “Are we in church or something?” Which is funny, cause I always associated it with vampires.
