Last year: if you’re in the highest tax bracket, and you get a $10,000 bonus, and you give it all to charity => the charity gets $10,000; you get nothing; and the feds get almost nothing. Since you would probably have to pay the stupid Medicare tax on it, that donation would cost you about $100 out-of-pocket.
Under Obama, same scenario=>the charity gets $10,000, the feds get somewhere between $800 and maybe $1,600 (depending on where the highest bracket ends up, and whether or not the income limit on Social Security taxes is removed (and I think you can make book on that last condition)).
So, Miss Lea, if your average greedy capitalist wants to give 10 grand to charity, our gallant leader will charge them on the order of a thousand dollars for the privilege of doing so.
She’s an actress not a tax accountant. What do you expect from her really? I am glad she at least gives time and money to Alzheimer’s research. When actors speak about a cause I expect the worst and then I can only be pleasantly suprised.
I expect her to be asking why are you taxing my charitable contributions unless you want to see these charitys run out of cash and die? One time, years ago actress’ were intelligent. Pretty sure Olivia DeHaviland and her peers would have seen this for what it is. This one merely wants to hug Obama. She makes it half way and then sort of loses it in the Obama haze she still suffers from.
Soooo … taking away the charitable deduction means the government should make up the difference? “If he wants to cut the tax breaks then he’s gotta give more money from the government to it.” And when folks complain about there not being enough money, what do you think they’ll do: Cut the program that hands money to Alzheimer Association or raise taxes?
And the charitable deduction was “cut into by the previous admin…” How, exactly, Mrs McFly?
To bad there wasn’t a screenwriter around to fill her head with words. Then her liberal gibberish might have at least appeared somewhat coherent.
In principle, she is right about one thing, when you do good for someone else you should not expect anything in return … from the person for whom you did the good act.
Totally agree more on the Alzheimer’s thing, Outlaw, but why couldn’t she just leave it at that, owning up to the fact she’s not an accountant and saying, “I’m not up on that issue.” as she does a little later?
No, no. She’s got to include the requisite Hollywood Bush-bash so she can get her invite to the next cool Hollywood party. Eh, typical.
OMG she is a MORON!

It would seem that Ms. Thompson is suffering the early effects of Alzheimer’s herself.
