Well this is just a tad disappointing. The 2016 field narrows again. First there was the Chris Christie tongue bath of Barack Obama and now the resignation of David Petraeus as Director of the CIA for an affair.
CIA Director David Petraeus resigned his post on Friday, confessing to having shown “extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair.” The former Army general rocketed to global prominence as the man in charge of the “surge” in Iraq and later the commander of American forces in Afghanistan.
President Barack Obama said Petraeus had led the Central Intelligence Agency “with characteristic intellectual rigor, dedication and patriotism.”
“I am completely confident that the CIA will continue to thrive and carry out its essential mission, and I have the utmost confidence in Acting Director Michael Morell and the men and women of the CIA who work every day to keep our nation safe,” the president said in a written statement.
“Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time,” Obama continued.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper issued a statement that did not specify a reason for Petraeus’ departure but praised his colleague extensively.
An extramarital affair? Am I missing something here? Head of the CIA is not, strictly speaking, a political position, so it seems odd that this would warrant him resigning.
Agreed, but at least we now know for sure he’s not a Democrat.
It’s inherently compromising, blackmail, etc. Plus he’s an otherwise honorable man and knew it was wrong.
This kind of thing disqualifies you from having a secret or top secret clearance. Not that appointees are generally held to the same standards that a regular .gov employee or contractor is when it comes to security.

If you have an affair you can’t hold a security clearance…kind of a big deal if you are the head of the CIA. Nice screening the FBI gave prior to him taking the job, huh? Additionally, she was supposedly trying to access his e-mails.

Funny, our President did this, lied about it under oath, and Democrats hold him up as the best ever. This guy does it, doesn’t like under oath, and he’s forced to move faster than Clinton at a porn convention.
We don’t know if he was forced out, he may have done the right thing on his own. He was “forced” by the investigation by the FBI, but he may have decided that it was the right thing to do. I’d wait and see on that.

They are trying to frame Petreaus and covering BHOS ass. Rep Trey Gowdy and Rep King have both said that if Petreaus won’t testify on his own, he will be subpoenaed. He may take the fifth but that would just cause more people to question whats going. Krauthammer said it best when he said that sex will make this scandal worse.

I never said it wasn’t about Benghazi… of course it was. He should still testify. Adultery isn’t a disqualifier. And he should have resigned whether or not he was forced to — he acted disgracefully.
Heres the thing we all need to ask ourselves. The FBI knew for months..why’d it take so long to “force” Petreaus to resign? I have a theory. The General didn’t know they knew and when they as in the Admin tried to get him to lie for them over Benghazi he said Im done doing that. So they dropped this bit of information on him, he said and resigned with all of the information out there. Hence no way to black mail him. Powerline Blog has a GREAT post about it. Here it is.
