Classic Pick O’ the Day — November 11

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

On the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace.
Director: Nicholas Meyer. Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Christopher Plummer, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, James Doohan, Kim Catrall. TV-14. 12:45 PM EDT. IFC.

As I mentioned the other day this is my favorite of the Star Trek franchise — the best fully realized concept of the old show’s themes — especially following the fall of the communism. And yes… none of the major unedited movie channels are showing military movies on Veteran’s Day. AMC has a full slate. Also on IFC tomorrow are prior CPODs Star Trek: First Contact (12:15 AM, 5:30 PM), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (7:45 AM) and The Last of the Mohicans (10:15 PM).

It’s too bad the Shat had completed his mid-age spread by then. So, all I could think of during the whole movie was “It’s the 24th century and they still haven’t figured out how to avoid the spare tire? This became even more pronounced as Kirk was put in a Klingon gulag where what food there was would not be very appetizing to a human. Now, in the era of cgi, maybe someone could put it to good use and slim down the active duty personnel!
