Joe McCarthy did a lot of things wrong, but was basically right – there were Communists in the highest offices in American government.
But don’t tell that to that ostensibly “conservative” paper of record, the Wall Street Journal, which is promoting “Enemies Within: Joe McCarthy” with this bit of unfounded hyperbole: “… Sen. Joe McCarthy’s name would forever stand for a reign of terror by accusation…”
…reign of terror ?!?
McCarthy was, is, and always will be Leftists greatest boogeyman. But don’t think there isn’t some attempt at “balance” in yet another bit of anti-anti-communist propaganda this documentary. The show includes “Conservative commentator Ann Coulter [who] declares McCarthy a ‘great American patriot, sent by God….’ On this there’s more. Don’t ask.” Oh, by the way, no one else is identified as “Liberal”.
Nice… a word I received in an email this morning applies to this writer promoting this Smithsonian Channel crap: Ignoranus, defined as a person who’s both stupid and an *sshole.
Joseph McCarthy was the quintessential broken clock — right twice a day. He was a drunken asshole who told a lie that turned out to be somewhat true. Typical of Republicans to be right on an issue but have the biggest douchebag in the party be the spokesman for it. HUAC was the better version of the fight against communism
McCarthy was a reign of terror in a way because being falsely accused of being a commie would ruin your life (professionally, personally, economically, etc.) — and that would terrify me. There are loads of ways not involving sharp instruments or weapons to terrify people.
Who exactly did McCarthy falsely accuse of being a communist? What was going on in Eastern Europe at the time was TERROR.Floyd, your use of that word in connection with McCarthy is silly.McCarthy’s biggest mistake was hooking up with that goof Roy Cohn.
Floyd, can’t remember the title and author right now, but the McCarthy bio that came out a few years ago exhonerates him from much of what you say (or has been said) about him. The vernona papers reveal that the names on his list were soviet spies and much detail about what they reported, and who they reported to. This is the only objective bio and a section of it goes into showing how biased all the other bios have been. The FBI kept the vernona papers secret, but fed McCarthy the info. Soviet KGB files also support his credibility.
The book is Blacklisted by History, by M. Stanton Evans. It would make a fine Christmas gift by using the Amazon link on the right. It’s the most thorough book written on McCarthy using documents unknown or unreleased at the time that other bios were written. Speaking of Coulter, she reviwed the book …
You’ll forgive me if my reading hasn’t included Ann Coulter books or books on McCarthy. I’ve been otherwise engaged. I’ll check it out though I’ll point out that a lack of respect for Smokin’ Joe doesn’t equal a love of Acheson.
You may identify with whomever you choose, but I was thinking more of Dorothy Parker’s acerbic, pointed wit and the noble camaraderie of Camelot. That’s my Threedonia Roundtable, jousting included.
“I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table, after four I’m under my host.” ~Dorothy Parker
Some of you may have read in the news about the “hate crime” that happened over Thanksgiving when a lesbian was beaten up by her girlfriend’s brother. Well, surprise surprise, it turns out that the attack had nothing to do with her sexuality. But like the Matthew Shepard story, the media sees an attack on a gay person, and immediately calls it a hate crime without bothering to get the facts. (The fact that it happened in Alabama helps, because it gives them yet another chance to bash the South as full of bigots).
Got the same thing happening here at UVa. Students were walking around one night. One group ran into another group, someone used the word ‘faggot’ and punched another. Like guys have been calling other guys that for decades without it being a “hate crime”.
But now … the idiots who got in a fight have elicited the following from UVa’s President Sullivan (received via email):
“Dear members of the University community:
“Living in a community of trust involves values and principles that extend beyond the refusal to lie, cheat, or steal. A community of trust also requires that we act with respect toward everyone in our community, regardless of personal attributes such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.
“Belonging to a community of trust also means taking steps to protect the community. This includes not only taking care of our friends, but also watching out for people we do not know when we witness words or actions that are harmful or in violation of the principles of respect.
“The recent bias-motivated assault against a student based on his perceived sexual orientation, which occurred on the evening of Nov. 15 (and was reported to the community through a Nov. 17 email from UVa Police Chief …), is deeply disturbing.
“If you witness an action like this, I encourage you to be more than a bystander; be a protector of our community’s values. Recognize that something is wrong and, within the limits of your own safety, speak up or get help. In some cases, you may only need to say something to turn a situation around.
“Words, as well as actions, are important. For example, the ‘not gay’ chant during the singing of “The Good Old Song” at football games is deeply disturbing. Several years ago, students made an effort to stop this from occurring, but it has returned. This is disrespectful and harmful to gay students. Furthermore, it is denigrating to the entire community, and it is within our students’ power to end it.
“Deciding whether to act is a personal decision, especially if your own safety may be at risk, but reacting and responding are part of protecting our community. You can make a difference simply by calling 911 for help or by notifying the Dean of Students (through the “Just Report It” system at http://www.virginia.edu/justreportit). One person can make a difference. Together, many people can bring about community-wide change.”
And if that PC dripping email wasn’t enough, faculty and staff were encouraged to subscribe to “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education” – But don’t expect to find diversity of thought in “Diverse”.
Yep. If I had a dollar for every time a knucklehead on the street called be a d!ke – not because he/she thought I was gay but because it was his/her best effort insult while I handcuffed him/her – I wouldn’t be hangin’ around this joint. I’d be at the Ritz drinkin’ Korbel Stingers on the rocks.
Hmmm … must be a regional colloquialism. It is Wednesday, as in being over the hump in the middle of the week, Mrs. MD thought yesterday was Tuesday, so I’m teasing her mercilessly.
Actually, that camel symbol with the logo and the 66, is from a trucking company that went out of business in 1986. The 66 refers to US Highway 66, the backbone of America. The name of the company is Campbell’s 66 Express, headquartered in Springfield, Missouri.
I used to see their trucks all over Texas in the 1970s’
One famous business that called Springfield home was called Campbell’s 66 Express and their trucks, whose sides were blazoned with “Snortin’ Nortin” the galloping camel who was just “Humpin’ to Please” once was a familiar site all up and down the highway. For more than 65 years “Snortin’ Nortin” epitomized Route 66 in the heartland but sadly it closed and ceased operations in 1986. Today a couple original trucks and trailers can still be seen at Henry’s Rabbit Ranch and Route 66 Emporium in Staunton, Illinois.
Never really thought about it, but the folks in the Nordic offices with whom I deal do have a much better grasp of English when writing to me. Don’t get me started on the Italian and Spanish offices, though. Now about that “English and Scandinavian can end a sentence with a preposition” thing …
Thanks for sharing, Lars. I shall gift you with purchasing another of your books. Not saying when I’ll finish it, but I’ll buy it.
A bit late with the freight! Here’s coffee and more “Missing Person” posters on Magnus! Stick them up wherever you go. I got mine from the Post Office!
Another idiot “conservative” who thinks surrendering on social issues will win the day for conservatives. Roger L. Simon joins the morons who think abandoning these issues to the Leftists mean the government will then leave us alone.
“My point is: The social issues, whatever your position, are best dealt with outside the governmental realm.
“I realize this is an unattainable goal and that government will always intrude in our private lives to some degree, but we must fight against it as much as possible for several reasons.
“To begin with, social conservatives will be vastly more successful at having their views accepted if they make their case extrinsic of government.”
This is what happens when one spends too much time in or around the Hollywood fantasy-land. You start to believe your own bullshit. Everything he writes about social issues is completely detached from reality.
“Even more ridiculous is the notion that redefining marriage makes government less intrusive. The notion of civil rights that fuels the push for “marriage equality” requires pumping up the power of the state to bulldoze older traditions and attitudes that stand in the way of the full acceptance and affirmation of homosexuality. It’s going to lead to litigation, regulation, mandated school programs and “inclusivity” seminars, and lots of other legislation. For good and for ill, the civil rights revolution of the 1960s created entire government bureaucracies, which in turn led to corporate diversity consultants and many other positions, all keyed to compliance.
“Mehlman needs to either open his eyes or be honest: the gay rights movement can’t succeed unless and until the apparatus of the state is brought to bear on traditional institutions that don’t treat homosexuality and heterosexuality equally. It’s not just religious institutions. Basic cultural practices such as sex-segregated bathrooms and locker rooms will be revised—and always under pressure from the courts and government bureaucracies tasked to ensure LGBT rights.
“This is in the nature of all progressive projects. The push toward redefining marriage involves creating a new possibility that would not otherwise come to pass if traditional institutions and attitudes were left alone. How will this change be effected. What will have sufficient power to overcome the always substantial solidity of the status quo? Government, of course. That’s why the progressive project is always essentially political.”
Yo, Roger, get a clue. Surrendering means you lose.
Reno’s article was in response to former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman’s arguing the same thing Simon argues, that conservatives need to abandon, i.e., surrender, on social issues.

Yeah, I know about the General’s surname error. I just copied from the comment above (I think it was from Fritz – yep, under the bus, Colonel) and I didn’t take the time to look it up. Won’t do that again.

Yes, today, the thorns protect those who would steal the blossom instead of the plant. Intolerant Budhist Monks, is that possible? Where’s the whitewash? History is wrong again!
I fully expect the Re-Dumb-licans to cave. Their thinking is so short sighted it can’t get beyond the next day’s propaganda “news” cycle, let alone the next election. There’s a reason the GOP is often referred to as the “Stupid Party”.
I know what the new GOP logo should be. Get rid of that stogy old thing and replace it with this.
And for Scott lets say YA for a democrat majority forever n ever because thats what his silly comment really means.
First off Boehner has not caved. Secondly its a few assholes in the Senate whining like bitches. Taxby Chambliss for one. This is a war and instead of attacking teh GOP SCOTT hows about you get off the computer and do something to help fix it…reform it.
The one thing that is just excruciating about being in the black hole of Korea is this: Seeing people in the USA scream and yell on twitter, facebook, and blogs and knowing they are not doing a GD thing to change the problems we have. I’d bet 90 percent of the biggest loudmouths I know never lifted a finger to help Romney before the election. They whined before, they are complaining now and were too lazy and shiftless to make calls, sign wave, door knock….if you don’t want to work for a victory you don’t deserve it.

Good riddance,GOP
I fully expect the Re-Dumb-licans to cave. Their thinking is so short sighted it can’t get beyond the next day’s
propaganda“news” cycle, let alone the next election. There’s a reason the GOP is often referred to as the “Stupid Party”.I know what the new GOP logo should be. Get rid of that stogy old thing and replace it with this.
That looks gay!
Don’t be homo-phobic now, fritz ..
I’m not afraid of homosexuals, I just think they’re nuts!
So…in keeping with the “Bronie” deal, the Republicans are going “Dumbonie?”
Scream,Steph!

Mittens? Who’s got mittens?
Clue to Magnus’ whereabouts found
No way!
Another clue.
If he is wearing that, his wife probably won’t let him get far.
I hear “a little dab’ll do ya.”
If anyone wants to lick a pig, I’m here and I don’t need no steenkin’ bacon flavored aftershave!
You are one generous guy. Words just can’t describe… *o^
