Classic Pick O’ the Day — December 5

Written On The Wind (1956)
A young woman marries into a corrupt oil family then falls for her husband’s best friend.
Dir: Douglas Sirk. Cast: Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone. TV-PG. 8:45 AM EST. TCM.

No one did repression and melodrama like Douglas Sirk — an under appreciated director. This one has less undercurrent than usual. Malone won an Oscar for her portrayal of the amorous young woman. Also on tomorrow are prior CPODs Peyton Place (6:00 AM), They Live By Night (10:30 AM), Gun Crazy (12:15 PM) and Stella Dallas (3:00 AM).

  • We watched this in my theory class in grad school. Probably my least favorite film of that semester, but it improves with viewing. Plus it’s such a smacking representative of its time
that it’s one of those must-sees.

I’ve always liked this one. Sirk was an early David Lynch, type. I think it inspired the TV show, Dallas. But one line always stood out … Robert Stack’s martini recipe … “you pretend to pour the vermouth in.”
