Matt Helm stole my idea for this week’s Five brought this up in a previous OT — favorite Christmas songs, secular & non-. I’m also thinking Christmas novelty songs and Christmas cartoon villains…Name your favorites!
5. Christmas covers (contemporary) : Eagles & Please Come Home for Christmas. I think of it as a less depressing version of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”.
4. Christmas covers (classic) : Elvis & Blue Christmas. A sexy Yuletide? Only he could make it happen.
3. Christmas cartoon villain : The Grinch. Mostly because his hair grew an evil grin too, and that was frightening. But cool!
2. New (or recent) Christmas songs (tie): Elton John & Step into Christmas and George Michael’s Last Christmas. Just fun.
1. Radio Christmas (tie): (Named for that once-a-year tune that’s every fifth song on the playlist.) Jose Feliciano & Feliz Navidad and Boney M & Mary’s Boy Child. Utterly infectious, completely joyous, and must be sung at the top of one’s lungs.
Christmas cartoon villain…easy…Obama! That is all. Nothing else to report except I may be visiting a chimney near you! Be good boys and girls! Santa knows!!!
Forget Harry Reid,Fritz?
He’s a Christmas clone. To be a clown he’d have to be funny. He’s a lot of things, but funny ain’t one of them!
5. Christmas covers (contemporary): I know nothing of contemporary music. Get off my lawn; you mess up the pretty snow with your footprints.
4. Christmas covers (classic): Most anything by Nat King Cole.
3. Christmas cartoon villain: Scrooge. Always Scrooge. As I grow older, I am becoming Scrooge.
2. New or recent Christmas songs: Such things do not exist in my universe.
1. Radio Christmas: I have no idea what this question means.
Hmm, I dodged most of the questions. This pleases me.
You made me smile. I’m betting that will not please you, but it’s true!
Going back to the topic at hand . . .
5. Christmas Covers (contemporary): Winter Wonderland by Annie Lennox – love this version
4. Christmas Covers (classic): Jingle Bell Rock by Brenda Lee
3. Villian: Tie between the Grinch and the Abominable Snowman from Rudolf
2. Original Songs – slightly older: Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney and Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses
Newer: Is It Time Yet (I Can’t Wait) by Jumbo and Mrs. Claus Ain’t Got Nothing On Me by Little Jackie
1. Radio: Tie: Run, Run, Rudolf – fairly partial to the Bryan Adams and Chuck Berry versions and Santa Baby, Madonna version
Only 3 more days!!
Favorite Christmas video – “Happy Holidays From Bing and Frank.” Floyd posted a clip of it the other day in his OT.
Christmas overs (contemporary) – “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. Floyd posted it the other day, too.
Christmas cartoon villain – “The Snow Man” (1932). You think it’s going to be a feel-good cartoon a la Frosty, and then the snow man becomes an evil bastard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWQU1nP61Ms
Christmas cheese – “Santa Claus” (1968). A Mexican movie that pits Santa against Satan. It might have psychological side effects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qran0XlICY
Christmas radio (tie) – Old Time Radio. Lionel Barrymore playing Scrooge, and anyone of The Great Guildersleeve Christmas episodes.
“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” the U2 version … btw.
For original songs– Tom Lehrer’s “A Christmas Carol”
For covers, Gary Hoey’s “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” (he also does an excellent “Linus and Lucy”)
Here are a few of my favorite contemporary Christmas tunes:
1. “Winter Wonderland” — Fleming & John
2. “Winter Wonderland” — Stryper
3. “Winter Wonderland” — Steve Taylor
4. “What’s This?” — Danny Elfman
5. “Fractured Christams” — Boyce Hawkins
Get ‘em while they’re hot — I’ll be removing the DropBox links soon, since he knows when I’ve been bad. And by “he”, I mean RIAA Claus. Gotta keep the hoi polloi from listening to out of print music, dont’cha know.
