Christmas Stalking?

Ohio college student (Kansas native) Aubrey Ireland has won a civil stalking restraining order against her parents (Dad pictured above with Aubrey) from an Ohio court.

Earlier this month, Common Pleas Court Judge Jody Luebbers ruled in her favor, ordering that her parents must stay at least 500 feet from their only child until September 2013.

“They basically thought that they were paying for my college tuition and living expenses that they could tell me what to do who to hang out with … basically control all of my daily life,” Ireland told ABC News.

The dean’s list student’s complaints against her parents began when she realized they’d installed monitoring software on her computer and her phone. They paid unannounced visits, traveling 600 miles from their home in Kansas, to meet with Aubrey’s department head.

They also accused their daughter of promiscuity, doing drugs, and having mental issues to the point where they were considering going to court to order that she get treatment.

“My mom has always been very overly involved,” Ireland said. “I would have to get on Skype all the time to show them that I was in my dorm room, or there were nights I had to leave my Skype on all night and my mom would watch me basically sleep.”

She claims her parents, David and Julie Ireland, have been diagnosed with co-dependency disorder. Her parents, however, say their daughter is just a good actor, and is lying. They said she is “an only child who has been catered to all her life.”

Because Aubrey has cut all ties with them in a very public way, they now want a refund of the $66,000 they’ve already paid toward her education.

“We’re not bothering her,” Julie Ireland said. “We’re not a problem.”

But Aubrey said that taking the issue to court was a last resort.

I’m of two minds here. My default position is “don’t take money from your parents if you don’t like strings — and there are ALWAYS strings attached…” On the other hand, there is no right for those strings to go around the kid’s neck like a noose and if even half of what the daughter says is true then they’ve got “issues”. One thing I know for sure though… when it comes to the tuition money… well… what say you Willy Wonka?

Wow, those parents are creepy. On the other hand, Little Miss Independence is an adult and can fund her own education if she doesn’t like the way her parents treat her. The article is a bit sketchy on details, but I don’t see why the daughter had to take her parents to court. Was she hoping that they would continue to fund her while simultaneously being ordered to stay away?

The article states that because the parents are not paying her senior year tuition, the school gave her a scholarship.

So when she graduates, no parents’ basement for her!!

Clarification: the article I read earlier was from the local news, WLWT, linked from Drudge; it had the scholarship info, not the article Floyd linked.

They said she is “an only child who has been catered to all her life.”

They’re at fault that she’s at fault, man, that’s faulty stuff. I checked the article, there could have been just a little sense injected if she was pre-law. But No! theater student, good actor, OIC now

When I wanted my mom out of my life (in a crazy way, I still let her visit and get her presents and stuff) I quit taking her money and set boundaries. Done. And stalking your children is what my family does best, my mom has actually left several counselors speechless with her relentless crazy. This little girl needs to grow up.

  • When I was her age I had come to this great country alone to work as a domestic servant. I was sending money back to my parents. There was never any chance of getting a higher education. I was working full time from the age of fourteen. I still can’t accept that a woman her age would be dependent on anyone. She’s nuts – they’re nuts!

Another reason why the little Schplatt kiddies are going to be paying for their own education. Yes, mommy and daddy will be happy to help if things seriously go into the crapper, but there’s nothing wrong with just taking responsibility for your own life.
