This looks interesting — visually especially. From the ComingSoon.net Plot Summary:
Based on a true story. When Abraham Lincoln (Tom Amandes) is elected President, he brings only one friend to Washington: his banjo-playing, joke-telling former law partner and confidant, Ward Hill Lamon (Lea Coco). Lamon is also large and handy with a gun, and when the first assassination attempt occurs in 1861, Lamon appoints himself the President’s bodyguard. He serves Lincoln faithfully throughout the four years of the Civil War and from this unique perspective, Lamon witnesses every aspect of Lincoln’s fiery trial as Commander-in-Chief, from the constant military and political pressure, to the personal losses of friends and family members. Lamon soothes Lincoln’s tormented soul, saves him from repeated attempts on his life, and introduces him at the Gettysburg Address. Lamon is not present on that fateful night at Ford’s Theater in 1865 because Lincoln sends him on a mission, yet it is Lamon who redefines that tragic event in a surprising and uplifting manner. This visually unique film features sets created from actual Civil War photographs.
Directed by Salvador Litvak.
It is an interesting idea and the backgrounds look great. The problem for me is that the quality of the background imagery highlights the lesser quality of what’s going on in the foreground.
I think that’s right Matt. Zack Snyder and Tim Burton are adept at using those kinds of background because they make what’s happening in the foreground interesting.
Now I have two Lincoln movies to see.
I like the idea, but it comes off cheesy to me.
Lincoln used to walk to the War Department everyday by himself. It was a different time.
Tom Amandes is an interesting choice for Lincoln. He played Elliot Ness in the ’90s version of The Untouchables, but he’s best known for milquetoast characters like Geena Davis’ yuppie husband in The Long Kiss Goodnight. If they ever make a movie about Mr. Rogers, he’d be perfect for that role. My guess is, his Lincoln will be as anti-Daniel Day-Lewis as you can get. This does look like it would be worth a viewing.
I’ll watch it. It might turn out to be pretty good.
