Matt, back in my bachelor days I kept my ego firmly intact through the theory that all women who rejected me must be lesbians. Of course they were few and far between, but still, I had to rationalize those few somehow… Just remember, it’s not you, it’s them.

Matt, I was a public school kid so I was never offered the opportunity, but the Little Fireflies are all altar servers and I’m always on pins and needles when they get the bell assignment (they tell me they do eeny-meeny-miney-mo for bell, book or candle in the dressing room before mass; loser gets bells, but my kids often volunteer). Our parish’s bells are particularly sensitive. Every rookie always makes the mistake of lifting them off the floor about a sentence early, to be ready to shake them. Unfortunately the mere act of lifting them causes them to ring.

Father Ron, you’re awesome. Outside of my avatar, I think I used it up over the last 20 years. Not bad for a layaway plan. My last five years have been a practice of celibacy, so I think I have a shot. But I owe my celibacy status to the caliber of women I’ve dated/met over the last five years. And by caliber, I mean low caliber.

I’d like to ask Father Ron a question. I spent a year being an altar boy. Do I get to commit some sins that will be overlooked in regard to my service? And does that margin of error diminish if I hardly ever rang the bells on cue. Seriously, I never could ring them right on the dot. I was too nervous.
