A well armed populace of Civil War veterans thwarted a gang of thugs.Go,Minnesoder!
Darn right. Don’t mess with the squareheads. You can visit the bank, restored to its former appearance, in Northfield today, and they do an annual reenactment.
We don’t actually know absolutely that Jesse and Frank James were involved, though I don’t know of any historian who seriously doubts it. Cole Younger maintained throughout the rest of his life that the ones who got away were a couple other fellows. By that time he and Jesse had ceased to be friends, but the Quantrillian code still applied. You don’t rat on a comrade.
Cole Younger makes a cameo appearance in my novel “Troll Valley.” I had to stretch probability a little to work him in, but he was too interesting to leave out. Fun to write, too.
One other interesting thing — accounts of the robbery mention the outlaws wearing white linen dusters. For some reason, this very picturesque coat style never appeared in Hollywood westerns — until Sergio Leone introduced them in “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Other movie people immediately saw how well they looked on screen, and now you see them all the time.
Cole Younger spent about 25 years in the state pen,as I recall.I’ve seen 2 movies involving Northfield:Walter Hill’s “The Long Riders”
and Phil Kaufman’s “The Great Northfield Minnesotta Raid”.
I like “The Long Riders,” though it’s not particularly authentic.
Just so long as you didn’t have the Transcontinental Railroad going though Texas, Troll Valley is OK!
A thought inspired by the Pope’s call for prayer and fasting today for peace in Syria and the Middle East: Where are the Muslim calls for prayer and fasting for peace in Syria and the Middle East?
No offense,Daniel, but Mr. Pope ought to be speaking up for the dwindling Christian flock in the Middle East.
They fast and pray all the time, just not for what you think they should.
Good for the Aussies! Maybe there’s still hope for “real” change in America. The last idiot that proclaimed hope & change lied like a rug about transparency and the type of change he was talking about. Contrary to his beliefs, America is not yet ready to become another Soviet Union!
Coffee, krullers and kitchen remodels! Yes…in the thick of it, and not enjoying it in the slightest!
Yeah,Fritz has his tool belt on…I’m not making any cracks about that!
Oh, and in case you think I’ve been slacking off on the job…here’s our daily afternoon thunderstorms and rain! Yes…we are becoming Portland, Oregon! If there are those who blame this on global warming, man made or otherwise, I remind them that 2007, 1992 and 1988 were nearly the same, so it’s the cycles man!
