I think it’s safe to say that the majority of our readers here discovered Threedonia through John Nolte. Either at Dirty Harry’s Place or way back at Libertas, something about his writing captured our attention, and we followed him all the way here. Where he isn’t.
Well, he’s been running Big Hollywood since the New Year and while I’m enjoying the community over there, there’s been something missing: Dirty Harry.
I love Nolte’s movie reviews. I think his “Top 5″ lists are fun to check out. But I sure wanted a good, old rough-and-tumble Dirty Harry polemic. And here it is, concerning “Angels & Demons”:
One way to dishonestly destroy someone or something is to repeat only the negative about that someone or something. DreamWorks has just announced a new film about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and were it to focus solely on King’s extra-marital affairs no one would argue that the movie was anything other than a propaganda tool produced with the goal in mind of assassinating his character.
Now, DreamWorks could do this and hide behind the defense of “telling the truth.” After all, there’s little doubt King was involved with women other than his wife. But to focus solely on that aspect of King’s character without allowing for the full context of the great man’s life is pure, 100% character assassination.
The lie isn’t in what’s spoken – the lie is in what’s unspoken.
During my A&D screening I noted a hash mark each time an obvious swipe was taken at the Church. About 40 minutes in I had counted nine – most of them delivered by our protagonist played by Tom Hanks, some of them gratuitous and having nothing to do with the story. These criticisms included charges of the worst kind of intolerance, outright murder and what ends up being the film’s central talking point theme – a fear of scientific truth.
He mixes it up some in the comments, too. (For example, make sure you expand the first comment thread.)
Whether or not you normally follow the links we post, take a second and click on over to Nolte’s piece. The more hits and comments on this one, the better chance we’ll get another.

Well I’ll have to click now, just because I’ve heard so much.
I got here through June and the infamous June’s got cooties fight.
You had me at cooties.
Tracy, if you ever get a chance, click on “Dirty Harry’s Place” in the blogroll, pick a date between September and the election of last year, choose a post and read through the comments.
The thing about Nolte is not so much that he’s a good writer (although he is), but that he somehow attracts opinions from all viewpoints. It was a lot of fun checking the comments, jumping in and out of arguments, and wondering what Stephanie would say next.
Or if “it’s enough with the politics, already,” which I would understand, check out his review of WALL-E. And again, read the comments.
Oh, I’ve been sorely missing Mr. Nolte’s blog posts (aka rants). For a right-wing movie buff like me, they’ve been the very definition of “red meat.”
