Here’s a premise: If Christopher Nolan’s two Batman films had been published–visually and in narrative–in comic form (of course, the first film is based on Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, with significant changes) before the Watchman back in the 80s, especially The Dark Knight, Alan Moore’s famous/infamous book would’ve been preempted and trumped, with the course of the industry changed for the better.
The Dark Knight Returns already did that and was much superior to the stories of both Nolan movies (as were the Year One story lines). It came out seven months before Watchmen.
Sorry Matt, that’s:
1. Definitely debatable. I personally find Year One lacking even in comparison to the first film and it doesn’t hold a candle to TDK. Considering the influence it’s already had on reshaping the portrayal of the Joker in comics and how widely the story is favorably compared to BYO and DKR, a lot of people would likely line up to debate you.
2. DKR might be a dark story about a borderline-psychotic Batman in a dystopic world, but it lacks the philosophical meditation of TDK or even the cleverly delivered nihilism of Watchmen. Moreover, where TDK is unnerving in the unstated delivery of brutality by the Joker, DKR shocks with excess. That isn’t to say it doesn’t do some clever things or that it’s undeserving of its status in comics, but like Watchmen, it’s important more what it did during a certain period, than for how it’s endured.
correction: understated
You’re overlooking the fact that there would be no Batman Begins or TDK if it wasn’t for DKR. There most likely wouldn’t have been any Batman movie franchise at all, or they’d have been done in a much different tone. The Joker has been played many ways in the comics, as has the Batman, whether it was the whim of a writer or the influence of a movie. But TDK’s influence on the Joker’s current portrayal wanes (pun intended) compared to the longevity of Miller’s influence on the characters and movies up to date.
God damn you David for exposing the geek in me in front of Threedonia’s women.
Adam West will always be Batman to me.
I’m with Mike…
By the way,Floyd,it’s funny that you post that painting.I was reading a biography of NB last night:the chapter I was on described that event in vivid detail.
…there would be no Batman Begins or TDK if it wasn’t for DKR.
And, as you see in the prior post, I give it credit for what it did. It’s influence was significant, but we’re comparing them as standalone stories. Yet, there also likely wouldn’t have been a DKR without the original source material, which was always the main archetype, the era of campiness notwithstanding.
The Joker has been played many ways in the comics, as has the Batman, whether it was the whim of a writer or the influence of a movie.
Always variations on a theme, following their predecessors, like differing arrangements of the same music.
But TDK’s influence on the Joker’s current portrayal wanes (pun intended) compared to the longevity of Miller’s influence on the characters and movies up to date.
Indeed, but that is a function of time and we haven’t yet reached a point where we could make an apt comparison. It’s the *suddenness* of the influence that it’s had that is an indicator of the strength of its story.
God damn you David for exposing the geek in me in front of Threedonia’s women.
You hit the submit button and it’s all on you
The part I was responding to was ” … Alan Moore’s famous/infamous book would’ve been preempted and trumped, with the course of the industry changed for the better.” Which I took as your saying that TDK would have done that and influenced the industry rather than Watchmen having done so, if offered in comic form back then. That’s where I disagree as far as DKR. I don’t think that TDK as a comic would have been as influential because the movie never convinced me that there was a need for a Batman. They played the cops over the top useless and corrupt, but I was never convinced that the Joker couldn’t have been stopped by that universe’s equivalent of the FBI. DKR, to me, is very convincing of how dark Batman had become in response to how dystopian society became, and the necessity of his return from retirement. I was hoping to see that dystopia in TDK for the necessity of a Batman to emerge to make it more convincing. Miller recently has destroyed the character by making Batman a jerk in the last miniseries )although Lee’s artwork is nice).
I’m not going to write a post on this.
Eulogy: Heaven better with abortion doctor.
Is this the state of the Lutheran Church in the US? Pretty sure a man who murdered premature babys isn’t in heaven no matter how hard the so called reverend and the eulogy speakers try and twist the Gospel. This isn’t even sick…its like black is white and white is black. I am so GLAD my parents brought us up Catholic. I’d be embarressed to be a Lutheran after reading this garbage.
It seems that all the denominations are getting more and more liberal as organizations.
Matt… institutionally that’s true. Like a lot of institutions… gov’t, universities, labor union, corporations, the elites running drift leftward over decades.
Since pastors often come from or seek to become part of that governing elite (of the denominations) and the seminaries are often liberal you have what you have in the broader body politic. You have Lutherans who are liberal institutionally, some parishioners who are liberal, some who are conservative, and many who are nominal Lutherans (cultural, raised that way, etc.).
In years past — the nominals would’ve stayed because it was good for business, politics, etc. to go to church on Sunday. Now that that is basically passe, the nominals are leaving drove — they’re not real believers why waste the time and effort when they could sleep in? The conservatives are leaving in droves because the governing elite are liberal. They’re ending up in Catholic, Orthodox, or evangelical non-denominational churches. That leaves liberal mainline Protestant denominations in control of religious institutions, property, etc.
This Lutheran church (Tiller’s in Wichita) — I’d wager hasn’t mentioned the word “sin” in years (unless attached to the words “Bush” “war” or “climate change”). They preach a social gospel and “life application”, but I’d also wager do very little with the sick and poor of their community.
Catholics, Orthodox, Southern Baptists… those three especially have been almost always conservative theologically. American Catholicism has gotten more libral, but the bishops and Cardinals from the Southern Hemisphere (Africa and Asia, especially) and the last 2 rock solid Popes have the kept the RCC as an institution conservative (though you can look at some of their universities and seminaries to see liberal rot). The same is true for Southern Baptists — very conservative overall, but the rot is creeping in some of the seminaries and universities (and therefore into some pastorates).
I know there is a term for the phenomenon you’re describing, Floyd. I can’t remember what it is, though. It’s “______’s Law,” I think.
“Any organization that is not explicity conservative will become leftist over time.”
It could be a variation on Gresham’s Law: bad money drives out good, applied to politics.
Well you could say that about every church but the Catholic Church. The idiot at Notre Dame is not the rule he is the exception. And he was lambasted by the Vatican for it.
Steph… there are a lot of liberal Catholics and universities, priests… that’s not even debatable. Part of the whole priest/sex scandal was a result of some of that liberalism. No church is immune from lazy and liberal theological thought and the Vatican can’t purge all of it. Notre Dame is not the rule, but it’s hardly the sole outlier — the “it couldn’t happen to us” meme is what led to that — like in all denominations. I’m not saying the RCC is a liberal institution, but I guarantee you (I knwo first hand) that there are liberal parishes and I’d wager those parishes do less for the poor, sick, et al. than the conservative parishes — I’m not talking about institutional charities here)
Um and just so you all know……it snowed in Wisconsin. How does the leftwing environmental whackjobs explain that one? Morons. OK they will say we are to blame for lower sun spot activity and a dimmer sun.
I don’t really know if this guy is a conspiracy nut or the real deal, given how he was a favored guest on Art Bell’s radio show, but in Father Malachi Martin’s book The Jesuits, he explains how liberal the Vatican has become over the years and says that Satanism is practiced there. He was a Vatican priest, so it could be true. I haven’t read this book but I have read his book on exorcisms and found it hard to swallow that every possessed person was engaging in something the church found to be liberal, like reading existentialism, living in non-Christian neighborhoods, etc., and therefor brought on their possession. Not sure I buy the possession thing at all.
Here’s his website that describes his accusations:
http://www.tldm.org/news/milingo.htm
He is a conspiracy nut.
I don’t remember anything about “living in non-Christian neighborhoods” in Hostage to the Devil, Matt, but what Martin described in that book is no more outlandish than Father Gabriele Amorth’s accounts of exorcisms.
That said, Martin was laicized by the Vatican, and was certainly a self-promoter. He was a passionate foe of Vatican II. He also could be right about the Jesuits, but he’s a difficult source to trust without corroboration.
Matt give me a break. The Jesuits I know are the holiest men I have ever known. My hubby and I were married by one and lets just say teh guy was tapped by the Holy Spirit you could just tell. But hey if you want to spread an anti Catholic hate website go for it. God some people are ignorant. Sometimes I know how Jews must feel.
Hold on a second, Stephanie. I’m a Catholic and I’ve been troubled by trends within the Jesuits before.
Here’s what I wrote about Anne Holmes Redding, the Episcopal priest who was also a practicing Muslim:
The “they practiced Satanism” in the Vatican… that’s probably 2 Swiss Guards in their off-hours. Besides — theological liberalism is much more insidious and Satanic than “Satanism” — which is usually just an excuse to use drugs, see nekkid wimmins, and babble Latin phrases (though there is often a violence attached to it).
Floyd, you sir, are a genius!
I’m not spreading anything anti-Catholic. I said I don’t know if what he’s saying is true or conspiracy crap. I’d say that the Catholic church’s cover up of pedophilia was a pretty liberal thing, but I’m not blaming the religion, just the men who are supposed to be its spiritual leaders. Bernard Law is now a cardinal overseeing one of the three main basilicas in Rome right now. That’s not exactly a punishment for what he’s done. Why hasn’t he been defrocked?
Oh Matt maybe they should take him out and shoot him. WOuld that make you happy. I know all about this crap. The Church did what the Church did. Why hasn’t he been defrocked? You’d have to commit a felony or a blasphemy to be defrocked. An act of poor leadership would have you dragged to Rome and watched carefully. What part of keep your friends close and enemies closer is not understood here?
Matt–
That’s a fair question. Law wasn’t defrocked because he had not engaged in heresy. Defrocking isn’t a punishment for wrongdoing, but a recognition that a priest is no longer truly Catholic in harmony with Vatican teaching.
As far as Law being the titular head of St. Mary Major, I took a look at this thread, which gives a defense of that action.
The gist of it is that all Cardinals are the titular heads of some church or other in Rome. Law had been assigned to St. Susan’s, the national church of the United States in Rome. The change could be seen as a demotion. He does not reside in Rome, but in quiet retirement in Maryland. His leadership of St. Mary Major is nominal only, and does not require his presence or input.
And I still understand why it would make you angry. All I can say is that without being privy to the discussions and decision-making process at the Vatican, I am in no position to judge this.
You know what Mike get a brain. That website is HATE SPEECH! What part of that do you not get? How can you call yourself Catholic and think this crap? HOW? This is embarressing to even have a conversation about. WHat the hel is wrong with people. OK MIke yep the Jesuits tehy dance around naked to statues of a goat. Do you know how stupid that sounds? My husband and I were married by a Jesuit priest who happens to the holiest man I ever knew. How many Jesuits do you know? Lombardi himself was taught the Jesuit work ethic…and yep he sure was a Satanist. I mean hey…..they are just an awful group of warriors for God aren’t they?
Mike that site is anti Catholic bigotry and no one should tolerate it. Why would a person who calls themselves Catholic even go there? It is HATE SPEECH like I said and I meant it when I said I know how Jews feel.
Stephanie–
I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. I didn’t actually visit the site Matt linked to. I was going on my memory of Hostage to the Devil, the works of Father Amorth, the entertaining Art Bell show, and what I personally believe about Fr. Martin. (I have not read his book, The Jesuits.
I know there are fantastic Jesuit priests. But a Jesuit school should not employ a teacher who thinks that she can be both a Christian priest and a practicing Muslim.
Good Jesuits need to speak out about these kinds of things, because it is a source of grave scandal to Catholics.
THey do speak out. You just don’t hear about it. As far as the Church goes with Bernard Law we don’t know what was said or how things were handled. I do know that the idiot who runs ND was publically exoriated by the Vatican because Bishop Burke was the one who did it. He is the enforcer.
“I don’t remember anything about “living in non-Christian neighborhoods”
Mike it was the one with the demon called “Uncle” something, I forget its name. Basically, it came down to this guy’s living in a neighborhood of ethnic people who brought their pagan ways with them from their home countries, or something like that.
Uncle Ponto and the Mushroom Souper!
The most spine-tingling one of the lot!
That was the setting of the possessed person’s childhood, but I recall that the real difficulty arose because of the atmosphere of the home. The father was an alcoholic who pimped the mother out after he lost his job.
Stephanie, Law made it possible for young boys to continue to be raped. He shuffled these priests around dioceses without alerting them of their being molesters, and those dioceses in turn didn’t do anything about it. Law knew it and didn’t alert any authorities or have them defrocked. He only gave them more opportunities to rape kids outside of Boston. Had it been a regular person who had known about the amount of rapes, then that person would be charged as an accessory. Sorry, but the fact that the church doesn’t punish him, but rewards him instead, is wrong. Again, I’m not anti-Catholicism, but there are evil men within its walls, albeit a minority, but it seems they have some power if the likes of pedophiles are protected and their protectors rewarded.
Matt—
I’m not sure if that’s a fair characterization of what Law did. (I haven’t immersed myself in the case, so I’m open to correction.)
It’s my understanding, though, that Law was the subject of a grand jury investigation and no criminal charges were filed.
I’m not saying that he did nothing wrong, though.
Mike, it was believed that he knew all this stuff all along. If he didn’t, he’d still be in Boston. But he was forced to resign (like most people are in scandals) and was whisked away to Rome during all this. His testimony of all this stuff was like a bad politician’s, with him saying over and over, “I don’t recall …” If he wasn’t a thorn in the side of American Catholicism then why did they make him an Archpriest of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore at that convenient time? I don’t want to see him shot, but I sure as hell don’t want to see him rewarded.
Then shoot him Matt. If thats what you want. Apparently you have it in for not just him to but the whole Church. Sorry but I don’t share your burn it all down thing. That already happened. Ask the old man beaten to death by a Protestant mob in Scotland recently how he feels about anti Catholic hate speech. I know it is difficult for cetain people to understand unless they have hate aimed at them like I have. You see Matt I have run into virulent anti Catholic bigotry and these ignoramous’ always bring up this issue. I have said it before and I’ll say it again, how do you know that happened to that many kids? HOW?
You have a he said he said issue and no real proof but victimization. When I look at the issue I see a certain group of people who blatantly hate the church with a hate that would make Hitler blush using a problem wide spread or made up to be wide spread and it looked to me that people were recruited. Sure there were problems…wanna show me the physical evidence and direct evidence that that many “boys” were hurt? PROVE IT! You can’t can you. As far as I am concerned this issue had enough truth to it so others could leap on, regardless if they were being honest or not. It was a a huge scam perpetrated by more than one person out tehre who hate the Church for various reasons and latched on to this issue to not only get revenge but to get money. So please you want to have a debate don’t bring up something thats old hat. ALl you gotta do is give me direct evidence that that many kids had this happen to them. And I know you can’t. So please you want to go to your hate web site fine go for it. Awesome. Just remember there are people here who woudl die for their Church and feel very insulted that you would toss this bigotry at them.
Accusing a critic of behavior of members of the Catholic Church of anti-Catholicism is on the levels of people who accuse Obama’s critics of racism.
There is corruption in EVERY institution. In the Congress, Catholic Church, and my church, the Methodist Church.
Kit have you ever been told at the age of 8 your church killed Christ? I have. Have you ever been called a Papist? I have. No one calls Methodists these things but they do call Catholics tehse things and I know because I have had it happen to me. An old man was recently murdered in Scotland by a Protestant Mob. So whats a Catholic to do? Some of the worst Catholics I know are former ones..they either became atheists or went to the dark side of some nondemoninational looney bin Christian sect. I defend my own. I am sick and tired of being the target or my clergy being aimed at by ignorant people who have no clue as to what they are saying. If you don’t want to be called a bigot don’t point out hate catholic sites.
PM Gordon Brown called Omaha Beach “Obama Beach.”
But Good News from the Old World: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090607/ap_on_re_eu/european_elections
“Apparently you have it in for not just him to but the whole Church.”
I don’t, and never said that. I said, “Again, I’m not anti-Catholicism, but there are evil men within its walls, albeit a minority, but it seems they have some power if the likes of pedophiles are protected and their protectors rewarded.”
I get pissed when that subject comes up too when discussing the church, and people automatically associate it with pedophilia. I only mentioned it because the discussion was of liberalism invading organized religion, and I consider any form of corruption in religion to be liberalism. I have the highest regard and respect for priests and Catholicism, but as man, none of us are infallible, not even priests. If they commit evil they shouldn’t be treated any differently than you or I. As for the rapes being real or not, the Church officially apologized for it. They have enough money to make the allegations go away and save its reputation if they were false. That they accepted them as the truth shows that they happened. But not only that, a lot of these priests confessed these sins. Now this doesn’t appear to be a hate site http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/facts/fm0011.html it’s a catholic site that covers the myths of priest pedophilia and reports, “Pedophilia (the sexual abuse of a prepubescent child) among priests is extremely rare, affecting only 0.3% of the entire population of clergy. This figure, cited in the book Pedophiles and Priests by non-Catholic scholar, Philip Jenkins, is from the most comprehensive study to date, which found that only one out of 2,252 priests considered over a thirty-year period was afflicted with pedophilia. In the recent Boston scandal, only four of the more than eighty priests labeled by the media as “pedophiles” are actually guilty of molesting young children.” So I’d have to go with the Church on this one and say that the rapes really happened.
The above quote is what I point out to the people who want to associate the Church with pedophilia, and that it’s a thousand more times rampant in public education, yet no one automatically associates teachers with pedophilia.
Exactly.
Ditto.
I got what you were saying, Matt.
There’s an eye-opening book I read called Goodbye, Good Men, which is about the corruption in the seminaries that began in the early seventies and is now finally beginning to be addressed.
At that time, citing the “Spirit of Vatican II,” (You know, the spirit that invalidated everything the Catholic Church taught in the millenia before it? That one.)seminaries began to accept greater and greater numbers of heteodox (not heterosexual) applicants. The entire culture of many seminaries was changed virtually overnight.
And that’s were the scandal of “pedophile” priests originated.
I want this person to prove it. PROVE IT! Like I said if I were a juror and I had some 21 year old with his hand out saying this guy was mean to me when Iw as twelve and I want money I would say drop tro boy and prove it. Can’t then go get a job. Period. End of story. If you can’t prove this then there is no case. I’d say maybe a 20th of allegations could be true. This person whose book you cited is tainted by virtue of the fact that he isn’t Catholic and if I use the logic that tehse people use when aiming tehir hate filled spewings at the CHurch then he must be an anti Catholic bigot. I would love to have a disinterested jury and an impartial judge listen to this case and then decide once and for all. As far as I am concerned this thing was a scam and no the CHurch didn’t have the money to make it go away. You know that.
Stephanie, there is no Catholic magazine that I’ve found that’s more orthodox than “This Rock.”
Now, they didn’t review Goodbye, Good Men, but they did review Michael Rose’s follow-up book, Priest.
It’s important to remember that criticism is not always an attack. There was a grain of truth in the slogan “dissent is patriotic.” That slogan is true if it is dissent (or criticism) based in love.
Maybe I should have written a post on that story, after all. Then I’d be getting all these comments.
Stephanie, the only holy things that I know are my socks..I can get a whole pack of Navy Blues at Target for about 7.99..he he
Scott you just lost about 990000000000000 respect points. But thanks for sharing.
I’ll check that book out, Mike. In Ann Coulter’s “Godless: The Church of Liberalism” she cites that study, or one like it, to address the staggering disparity between pedophilia in religion and the school system, and how the liberals ignore the latter. And if Ann Coulter believes that these guys were pedophiles, then you know they were.
Stephanie, the Church apologized. Don’t question their authority.
Where do you get off slandering Lutherans,by the way…have you ever heard of the Missouri and Wisconsin Synods? You are thinking of the ELCA
Yeah I know about the Lutheran synods. I grew up in Wisconsin Scott. Where do you get off lecturing me? I asked a question about why a premature baby killer wouuld be embraced by an obviously very progressive and in my mind un Christian church? So instead of talking about it I get yelled at? Give me a break. I know plenty of Lutherans who are anti abortion and would have a tough time with that to.
Even they don’t ordain pedophiles…
Easy, Scott.
No they eulogize a baby killer. Right?
Easy, Stephanie.
Hey, Rufus? Floyd? Anyone?
We’re spinning out of control, here!
Are you kidding Mike? Floyd and Rufus are sitting back laughing at us, tilting the frosty beverages (strawberry margaritas … they don’t drink beer like real men). This was better than the Hagler-Leonard fight.
eh its OK. Sorry to get so worked up.
I apologize,Stephanie..honestly
I was out of line
Main point is that there are good Christian Churches of all denominations and bad Christian Churches of all denominations. You can’t label all the Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, Nazarenes, etc. bad because of one bad circumstance. I’m a Southern Baptist, but a Christian first. If a Church preaches and teaches the truth of the Gospel of Christ, it’s name doesn’t matter. The mattering is in the message. Hot button issues have become a devisive measure used by Satan to lessen the effects of the true Gospel to the lost world out there. When the Christians are infighting, it becomes fodder for the left and any other group who wishes to climb on board and say, “See, even the Christians can’t get their act together on this issue, or that issue.” While we debate among ourselves (not speaking of us at 3D) on issues not directly related to the truth of the Gospel of Christ, the whole world is out there thinking, why become a Christian because they’re obviously more messed up than are we. The message of the Gospel is the only reason a Church should have for it’e existence. Once the message is gone or poluted, the individual Church becomes a meaningless entity.
Thank you,Mike
Since we are all nice now, lets just have one big JD-style group hug!
You think we’re all nice, Kit?
Just wait until I award the Alfies.
–Mike!
Thank you, Fritz!
So. I think Batman should go back to being a campy, goofy, send-up of superheroes. Call me a reactionary originalist, but that’s how I feel.
Anyone see the Playboy blog by Guy Cimbalo? Never have I been more in the mood to kick a man in the bad place.
Good pictures? Link it!
No. It wasn’t good pictures…here is the link….
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/06/01/its-official-playboy-is-a-hate-site/
Playboy has officially become a hate site.
That was truly disgusting.
And if you look at Hugh Hefner’s face, you see what his choices have done to him already.
That wasn’t funny, it wasn’t erotic, it’s just disgusting.
Guy Cimbalo is just jealous. We got Mary Katherine Ham, Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin (woo-hoo!) aand the rest.
They got Hillary Clinton, Rachel Maddow, Rosie O’Donnell, and Roseanne Barr.
Hell, we even got good looking lesbians (Tammy Bruce).
The Mighty Furious D has something on the GE shareholder censorship where Immelt and Zucker cut off the mikes of shareholders critical of the two’s handling of the company.
http://dknowsall.blogspot.com/2009/06/hollywood-babble-on-on-299.html
Stephanie, they’re absolutely brutal!
I saw that Kit…..GE is out of control.
Furios D, had some (as expected) brilliant things to say.
My big fear is that it might affect USA Network, which runs MONK, PSYCH, and BURN NOTICE. It is owned by NBC Universal and, therefore, General Electric.
Huh? Who are? Playboy pulled the artical but you all know nothing gets printed or posted without passing the eyes of the old letcher editor of theirs. One of the few enjoyable things will be watching a man who helped ruin society and destroy virtue in America go down in flames.
I meant whoever wrote the Playboy piece. I knew they were sexist, but that kind of brutality can be inciting to the wrong minds. Hef is losing his grip.
Ah to be human…
This is what Batman movies should be like, and the costume. Watch the Invisible Predator trailer.
http://www.batmanarkhamasylum.com/media
The idiot who wrote it is some jerk named Guy Cimbalo who needs a swift kick by Megyn Kelly’s hubby. Playboy cannot afford this kind of publicity but there it was…and what is funny is that NOW won’t say anything about it.
Of course NOW won’t say anything about it. The ones that Mr. Cimbalo want’s hate %$&# are not Real Women.
NOW Dictionary
Real Woman (n) A woman who votes liberal, idiolizes Margaret Sanger, and hates male oppression (unless it is carried out by non-Christians, non-Republicans, non-Whites, etc.)
Interesting read, y’all. All I will say is that, for the most part, Christian Churches have lost their sense of eschatology, and when that happened, they became more like institutions than the Body of Christ, paying more attention to the here and now than the world to come, falling into the trap of self-interest rather than Other-interest. Priests, ministers, whatever, start desiring things of this world (Sex, money, power, etc.) rather than the next. As a result, the same happens to their flocks. If Churches were more eschatalogical, lay-people would not be aborting 9-month-old babies, and they would not be eulogized as being welcomed in heaven. Why Jesus didn’t return sooner is beyond my ken, but we have become fat, lazy, world-centered people over the millennia. But, there is the parable of the wheat and the tares, isn’t there? May God preserve those who are true to His calling, and may He have mercy on those who have destroyed the witness of His Church by sexual abuse or theological abuse.
Wow, I head off to church and ministry, returning to the longest thread of comments I’ve seen here that didn’t involve the mammalicious Ms. Hayek. Impressive you Catholics and wack-job Catholic-bashing Protestants.
Amen Father! Amen!
Fr. Ron, what do you know about Fr. Malachi Martin? Was he a crack pot, legit, or just trying to sell books?
Matt: I had only ever heard the name of Malachi Martin. I never read any of his books or come into contact with anything about him – I don’t read too many “Western” writers, anyway. I googled his name, and what I’ve read doesn’t interest me at all. Looks like he was into sensationalism in the topics he wrote about.
Playboy will be out of business in five years. They can’t survive as a nudie mag, not with online porn rampant, and they can’t survive as a literary mag trashing conservatives because US News, Newsweek and Time are frantically jumping into that same lifeboat at the same time, no matter how scandalous, sleazy or misogynistic of conservative women they become.
The newspaper crash has been well reported, but the magazine business has been hit worse.
I cancelled a subscription to NewsMax years ago, because through sites like this, the Drudge Report, and Fox News, I had already heard or read what their articles were about. It was old news. I knew that beforehand, but I just wanted that free USS Ronald Reagan cap that came with the subscription.
Dog owners, help me. My pooch eats one out of every three meals that I give him. I feed him a combo of dry Science Diet food, with a mix of Iams canned food. He started this when I just gave him the dry food, and then when I used the Sci-Diet canned food it continued. I’m afraid of using the stuff that comes from China, obviously. So, what do you people feed your dogs?
Matt, I don’t own a dog now but that’s a new one on me. I looked around the web and here are two sites that talk about it:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2069139_picky-dog-eat.html
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/finicky-dogs-how-to-encourage-your-picky-dog-to-eat/page1.aspx
It looks like, if the dog is healthy, you shouldn’t change the kind of food he gets. He may be playing the “maybe the next thing will be really good!” game. Establish a time to be fed, and put the food down and walk away—don’t give a dog who won’t eat extra attention. And make sure he’s not eating from the garbage!
That all seems to make sense.
Buford gets Purinas One and Iams dry for big dogs. A mix. He gets no canned. He does not..I repeat does not get table scraps. The vet says he is in better shape than any 2 year old dog he has ever seen. I wouldn’t feed my dog canned dog food anymore for the simple reason its not just more expensive it spoils them. Doo Doo gets two meals a day. One cup each. He thrives. Regular excercise, play time and food and a few treats..thats it. Feed your dog One.
What kind of dog is it?
Matt: I’ve found with my pooch (10-year-old mini dachshund) that his eating habits changed as he got older. I used to give him his daily supply all at once in the morning, and he would wolf it down all at once, so I had to break it up into two meals. Nowadays, it is midnight, and he hasn’t finished all I’d given him. Big change.
I have only ever fed him dry food, mainly because, since I have been unsuccessful in brushing his teeth, soft food builds plaque and tartar on the teeth and they go bad. Since he’s gotten older, I switched him over to Royal Canin Mini-Dachshund food (yes, they get that specific). I figure the formulation would cover everything he needed as a dachsie, and being premium, I don’t have to worry about the stuff they use for filler in lower-quality foods.
Thanks Mike, this may help. He’s in great shape and his nutrition isn’t a problem really, but like an old Eye-talian grandmother, I worry. Maybe we could have a Threedonia Dog Show by submitting photos of our pooches. I know that this site has been desperate for threads in occasion.
And Buford gets a cup in the morning and one before our dinner. Dont deviate from the habit.
Thanks, Stephanie. My parents give him table scraps when I go there for dinner, but that will have to stop. I thought it was harmless but I guess it’s not. I’ll try Purina One now that my Science Diet is gonzo. Maybe my Jake doesn’t like the canned stuff. I never thought about it and just assumed he would.
I am currently watching Errol Flynn’s ROBIN HOOD.
It is amazing.
Yes, Kit, it is amazing.
And when you get Jake used to a routine he will demand to be fed. I get barked at at 6:30 am everymorning and I mean a you better feed me or I will yell my head off bark. and at 6:00 Pm he demands the same thing. THey really don’t need that much. But they are moochers and piggies if you let them be that way. And they can be piggies. Canned food is just a way for dog food producers to make more money. We figured it out with Buford. We had dogs that had canned dog food and they wanted it and liked it but it was too much money and once they get used to eating the dry thats what they want. Doo Doo is pretty easy and very predictable but you can get them that way. They come to expect certain things.
I love the name Doo Doo, by the way. Jake doesn’t even eat the canned stuff off his dish and leave the dry stuff, so you’re right. I need to try something more appealing in the way of dry food. When his game is played out and he has no more table scraps coming his way, he’ll eat to survive. But he’s in amazing shape so I wonder if there’s a method to his madness. If there is, I just wish it would cost me less and not have to shit-can so many meals that I give him that remain untouched.
Watching Yankee Doodle Dandy on TCM now. I’m a sucker for this movie no matter if I come in on the middle or the beginning. So good.
You know James Cagney was originally set to play Robin Hood?
We got to fight against Prince John, see, and then we’re gonna end the evil taxes, see.
I am being forced to watch ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
I AM LOSING MY MIND!!!
Been there and done that, Kit. Hope at least you get laid for having to sit through that hippy-drippy cray-ap.
I am being forced by my family. My brother is a H-U-G-E fan.
