Victim Precipitation?

In criminology we study a concept called “victim precipitation” — what behaviors, if any, on the part of victims contribute to their own victimization? An abused wife staying with her abusive husband is the textbook example as would be going out drinking with people you don’t know. This story from The Brussels Journal is a complete WTF. This is the terrorist version of Grizzly Man — that dude that “loved” bears so much he got eaten by one. It also involves Dutch firebrand Geert Wilders so you know it’s good. Read the whole thing. I don’t think even Nancy Pelosi is this stupid.

In November 2008 a Dutch journalist, Joanie de Rijke, was abducted by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. She was held captive, raped repeatedly, and released after six days for a ransom of 100,000 euros ($137,000). After her ordeal, she acknowledged that her captors “did horrible things to me,” but added in several media interviews “They also respected me,” and emphasized “They are not monsters.”

In a speech in the Dutch Parliament last Thursday, the Dutch opposition leader Geert Wilders referred to Joanie de Rijke’s case.

“She was raped, but she was not angry. The journalist who went looking for the Taliban in Afghanistan saw her curiosity end in a cruel ordeal of multiple rape. While this would make others angry or sad, this journalist shows understanding. She says: ‘They also respected me.’ And she was given tea and biscuits.”

“This story” Wilders said,

“is a perfect illustration of the moral decline of our elites. They are so blinded by their own ideology that they turn a blind eye to the truth. Rape? Well, I would put this into perspective, says the leftist journalist: the Taliban are not monsters. Our elites prefer to deny reality rather than face it. One would expect: a woman is being raped and finds this unbearable. But this journalist is not angry because the Muslim involved also showed respect. Our elites, whether they are politicians, journalists, judges, subsidy gobblers or civil servants, are totally clueless. Plain common sense has been dumped in order to deny reality. It is not just this raped journalist who is suffering from Stockholm syndrome, but the entire Dutch elite. The only moral reference they have is: do not irritate the Muslims – that is the one thing they will condemn.”

Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in hostages, where the hostage shows signs of loyalty to the hostage-taker, regardless of the danger or risk in which the hostages have been placed.

The difference is that the “Grizzly Man” was killed by a bear not resident to the area, who was passing through, and thus not familiar with him. In light of that and the success that he did otherwise have, it would seem that his activities, while naive and partially blinded, were not wholly divorced from reality. This woman is just batshit crazy.

And the Grizzly Man’s methods were not all that different from some animal researchers, who nonetheless conduct studies with far less stupid risk and with a more coherent goal. The fact that such researchers are aware that they’re handling animals and treat them as such only heightens the contrast with loony liberals, who treat such “noble savages” like animals to be “understood” and, in a sense, domesticated. They aren’t just morally stupid, but in a way, they’re unknowingly engaged in evil, dehumanizing their subjects as much their subjects would dehumanize them (though far more intentionally). In contrast, our soldiers treat those populations, good and evil among them, as human beings, with the dignity inherent in such treatment.

I am reading Jurassic Park (again). And it seems that the Left is treating the various situations exactly the way Hammond and the dolts at InGen treated Jurassic Park. They way Muldoon and Malcom (and Grant and Sattler and . . . ) warn against.

They think they can control things.

Which is why I am starting to think that Jurassic Park (or at least something by Michael Crichton) should be required reading in school. And the students made to analyze it and understand what Crichton was preaching: the danger of thinking that man CAN predict the outcome. (I am reading LIBERTY AND TYRANNY also, and am seeing the core statements of Ian Malcom proven)

Oh, and Marcoe is also correct again: The woman IS batshit crazy.

Almost posted this earlier. Wilders’ statement is spot on. An incredible story. I like how the reporter felt complimented when her rapist asked if she would like to join a threesome with one of his wives.

If more of our academics, journalists, politicians and other left-wing believers (think Michael Moore and his Minutemen comment about the 9-11 hijackers) simply went over to Afghanistan, it would certainly thin out a lot of this stupidity.

    • I thought about posting this too, but I posted the Craigslist story, and didn’t want to get known as the “rape guy.” (I still don’t.)

“The only moral reference they have is: do not irritate the Muslims – that is the one thing they will condemn.”

Who knew turning the population of an entire country into dhimmis would be so easy? The Dutch seem so eager to fall into line.

The more I of the story I read, the more I lose my capability for cognitive speach. (Or whatever the appropriate term is)

” … it would seem that his activities, while naive and partially blinded, were not wholly divorced from reality. This woman is just batshit crazy.”

I’m sure if the bear only chomped on his arm, Grizzly Man would be right back there to give them the second course. I’d say he was just as divorced from reality as this woman, if not more. Who else would get sentimental feeling warm bear shit. Worse, he was instrumental in the death of the girl who filmed him.

  • David Marcoe

I didn’t say he didn’t have a screw loose. I said the fact he achieved actual results shows that he wasn’t totally wrong. This woman was proven completely wrong, in a devastating way, and still justifies them, except without the benefit of any doubt that she might have had previously.

“Worse, he was instrumental in the death of the girl who filmed him.”

While he holds some responsibility, the woman volunteered to be out there. This reporter is aiding terrorists and helping to shape public opinion, which might implications for many more lives than her own. I call that a bit of a toss up on the harm done by their actions.

  • Matt Helm

I don’t remember the results that he got. Holding some responsibility is what I meant by “instrumental.” Of course the girl is also responsible for volunteering. I’m betting that he told her that it was completely safe and there was nothing to worry about. Whether the bear was a resident or not doesn’t matter because it’s the wild and doesn’t mean the bears used to him wouldn’t make a meal out of him if need be. But I wouldn’t call it a toss up on the harm done because we have two dead people and a dead bear. This woman was raped and didn’t mind it. She’s aiding terrorist in an indirect way but the harm she’s done is only philosophical, as you said, ” … might implications for many more lives than her own.” “Might,” being the key word. She’s only shaping public opinion by preaching to the choir. No one in their right mind will change their opinions about terrorists based on her testimony. So two dead people and a bear vs. this lunatic scratching her raped my a muslim fantasy itch doesn’t seem like a toss up to me. We have certain harm vs. probable harm. Now, their insanity is definitely a toss up. The Grizzly Man is a great analogy though.

  • I can see a whole new, profitable field of sexology here. “Rape With Respect”: How to Express Your Inborn Sexual Orientation To Violent, Non-Consensual Intercourse, While Showing Respect to the Victim and Thus Avoiding Prosecution.”

Soon they’ll be teaching courses at major universities.

    • They could advertise on Craigslist.

      Imagine!

We could hire some professors! And publish a best-selling book!

  • Matt Helm

You mean they don’t already teach these courses, Lars?

  • Stephanie

What a stupid biotch. There I said. Sorry but any woman who identifies with her rapist is a sick and narcissistic ticket. Any psychiatrists want to take a swing at what makes her rather limited brain function? If that were me I’d have killed myself rather than go through that. God wouldn’t pass judgement too harshly either. And another thing her stupid statements don’t help women in the Islamic world either now do they? Day after day women are mistreated, dishonored, beaten, raped, abused emotionally and physically and there this idiot is having seen the evil up close and personal and she gives them KUDOS? WTF? Wilders kicked her ass to which is awesome.
You know what else pisses me off, there isn’t a man here who wouldn’t have gone to her aid and what would she have done then? Lambast ya’ll for getting her out of that situation?
