Drunk Indian Boulevard

What happens when political correctness runs amock? You end up with this.

For nearly a decade, locals here have been fighting American Indians over the name of a dead-end dirt road. The lane in question, on a woodsy bluff overlooking the ocean, was once called Squaw Point Road. Maine banned the word “squaw” from place names in 2000, in deference to Indians who consider it racist. Names such as Squaw’s Bosom Mountain and Little Squaw Brook quietly receded into history.

But residents here played Scrabble with the spelling instead. They renamed the road Squawpoint — then later, Squa Point and Squapoint, complying with the letter of the law but not with its spirit, critics say.

The resistance prompted the state into action again. This month, Maine lawmakers amended the law to ban public place names that include “the designation ‘squa’ or any derivation of ‘squa’ as a separate word or as a separate syllable in a word.”

Nine years. In that time, we’ve invaded, rebuilt and made a struggling democracy of a country of 25 million.

The fact Maine lawmakers actually counter-acted by amending the law speaks well of the contempt most legislators have for small towns and individual citizens.

I wish those square-head squatters would quit squawking like a squadron of squabs being squashed by Sasquatch.

These people are still going on the erroneous PC stunt from the 70s that the word squaw is derived from the Mohawk word, ojiskwa which is a derogatory word for the female vagina (not to be confused with mangina). Long stretch, wrong language. It comes from the Algonquain language “squa” which means “a young woman,” spoken by the Massachusett tribe.

Did they also ban Skwahpoint?? Or to Xpoint, and just tell anyone who asks that the “x” is pronounced “squa.”

Better yet, how about changing the name to Schmuckpoint in honor of the Maine legislature
