Nobel economist and sham columnist, Paul Krugman of the New York Times, has labeled anyone opposed to the Democrats behemoth crap-and-trade legislation as a “traitor to the planet.” Even as President Obama has relented on some of the finer points of the legislation, Krugman has pushed it a step further. Here’s something you rarely get in the media from a liberal op-ed – brutal honesty. Steve Spruiell of The Corner dug this tidbit up at Krugman’s blog:
The goal of Waxman-Markey is make the cheapest form of energy we have more expensive, consequently making everything produced in this country more expensive. It would defeat the purpose of this legislation to allow U.S. consumers to evade this energy tax by purchasing products from countries like China that choose not to adopt a similar tax. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to restrict Americans’ access to products from these countries, and the president is wrong to oppose such restrictions. What about that don’t you dumb hicks understand?
All in the name of climate change, a phenomena that remains a mystery even to those who profess its existence. Can’t wait to read that blurb in the campaign ads in 2010 – the purpose of this legislation is to make everything more expensive. If politicians, specifically those class warriors on the left, were this upfront they would no longer exist.
Obama remains popular, but for how long? His waffling on Iran was extremely weak, as is his mish-mash retort to the Honduran coup de tat. Couple that with increasingly unpopular legislation (which is resoundingly bemoaned in polling, so much for that center-left new majority) and the immediate failure of his first stimulus bill, his administration is getting bogged down before it can even start. Obama right-hand David Axlerod readily admitted the economy remains stagnant despite the voluminous stimulus package, and says a second may be on the way in the fall. If at first you don’t succeed …
Leave it to the Democrats to make Republicans seem competent.

The American people may figure it out, but I won’t count on it. The left still controls the major media, and they’ll go into massive CYA mode, making it all look like “George Bush’s Legacy.” If worst comes to worst, I fully expect them to start a war to divert attention. Then patriotism will suddenly be cool again.

Lars, the polling, week by week, shows that the American people are waking up. Obama’s numbers keep dropping at a steady rate. The American people woke up in ’68, ’80, ’84, ’94, didn’t buy it in 2000, and weren’t stupid enough to go for Kerry in ’04. And that was with the GOP governing with its brain tied behind its back.
Obama had to run as a centrist and plaster the airwaves with a $800 million ad campaign and he still couldn’t get above 4-6% margin of victory. Now? Every bit of polling I’ve seen recently is trending toward the right and conservatives are now the largest self-identified political group in the country. And the anecdotal stories of disillusionment with Obama are legion. It certainly isn’t in the bag, but I’m far from gloomy.
I don’t know about you David, but where I live the Democrats have flooded the area, mostly from California. More of my county is now registered Democrat….in a HIGHLY Mormon area.
I STILL to this day serve people that sing the praises of Obama….and get TRULY bothered when they find someone like me who think he is a national embarrassment.

But if they’re CA imports, the fact it is a very Mormon area is of less pertinence, no? I don’t make light of your experience, but on the other hand I hear consistent reports of B.O. disillusionment. And the numbers, almost across the board, are showing a persistent trend. Obama’s still has a strong base–the cult of personality is not an easy one to break–but it’s only been six months. Yet, he has done a fair amount of damage to his reputation and he’s doing little to improve it. That’s typically how presidents find themselves surviving only one term.
JJ David is right. Where are you when Hannity has Rasmussen on showing Obama’s daily numbers steadily declining.
oh, I know. I am aware of the polls. I suppose I did a supremely poor job of decrying the fact that my state has switched over from solid red to solid blue in what seems no time at all.
I’m of the opinion that it’s not necessarily so much that the area’s gone blue as that the people here have become “sheeple” and just don’t give two hoots what happens. They’re all so busy with their own little corners of the universe that nationwide concern never crosses their minds. It’s the same reason that people don’t get to know their neighbors here. They just don’t care. The people that move to this city are so mobile, they’re here today and gone tomorrow. They print two phone books a year here and I venture to say that a good 85% of those living here will be unlisted, and of those listed most don’t have an address listed. People come to southern Nevada to drop out and not get involved. We who are on 3D are very much the exceptions, not the rule.
Obama will remain popular because people are issues voters and don’t look carefully enough at politics. Or maybe better put, they do not have nor care about any political philosophy and do not think through the logical arguments behind why they vote the way they do. The people at this site are true political wonks but you have to understand you do not represent the majority.
Go to any political blog or site that is run by an “Independent”. I use the scare quotes because I believe there are no such thing, but this is what 35-ish percent of people call themselves. They are fully convinced that Republicans are anti-science, anti-logic, knuckling dragging, bible thumping, and freedom curtailing dumbasses. Until they find a way to shatter that image, we are in for Obama and his acolytes rule for some time.
OK Skip. Why don’t we all just kill ourselves then. I mean if your right what else can we do? We can’t fight Obama…if I had your attitude and believed half the crap someone I don’t know and wouldn’t trust wrote on a blog that called himself an independent I’d be dead right now. What part of you are being manipulated to believe the bullshit the left is tossing out there do you not get? And where were you during the tea partys? A million people get out on the street protesting and your here saying what? Do those people go to those blogs? DOubt it. Most have jobs and can’t take time to worry about some jerk hiding in his moms basement with Doritos dust on his lard has to say about anything. If you actually look at the numbers Skip more people identify themselves as being conservative than any other group. The reason why the GOP failed the last to elections is that it becamde MODERATE. The country is pissed off at both partys for the same reason. Hence teh rise of independent voters.
Well I didn’t say it was hopeless. Though it shouldn’t come as any big surprise the Republicans have an image problem. Even if every conservative voted Republican that still is a victory for Democrats. Let’s face it, a lot of conservatives vote Democrat hence what we know as Blue Dogs. This presents a conundrum for conservatives, being the Democrats play the game much better, the Blue Dogs are almost totally unreliable on national policy. They simply default to the liberal wing that runs the party. Usually, Democrats will calculate just how many Blue Dogs can vote against a liberal policy as to not risk Democrat control of the houses of Congress but retain their seats.
Back to the matter, what Republicans need to do is shatter the image they allow liberals (not necessarily all Democrats) to project onto them. Not impossible but with popular culture squarely on the liberal side it won’t be easy. Of course the people on the streets at the Tea Parties would consider themselves more conservative and look how they were portrayed, tea-bagging anyone? Independents totally buy into that and that is what the Republicans must overcome. It is not to say to become more moderate, but to show self described moderates (who truly aren’t, is there even such a thing) what the liberal and hence Democrat line of thinking leads to. They have to pitch conservative ideals in such a way to get people thinking about the ideology and to understand the important principles it adheres to.
Democrats are too good at making Republicans look whatever way they see fit, to maximize Democrats benefit. Until Republicans figure out a way to dissolve the mirage an empty suit like Obama is all that is needed to win elections, in fact it is preferable.
