A couple of days ago Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay was sworn in as an American citizen. He was born in British Columbia, but Bay’s wife and children are American. Bay said he’s not denouncing being Canadian, “but I’m definitely proud to be an American.”
Last year it was David Ortiz who took the oath of citizenship. On that occasion, Ortiz said “It’s a great country – proud to be here, now proud to be a part of it.”
Must be something in the (dirty) water up there in Boston.

Sniff … sniff … thanks for the post and link. I get sentimental about Boston on the holidays. If I were still up there I’d be at the Hatch Shell for the free Boston Pops concert and fireworks tonight, after spending the day down in Hyannis at a Cape Cod Baseball League game. Being down here in the swamp I don’t get to see many Sox games unless Fox or ESPN show them, or they’re playing the Braves and TBS has it. My friends in Boston say it’s the same thing up there too. Christ, I remember the good old days when you could watch the game every day on the UHF channel 38 up in MA.
When my family first got cable, we got Channel 38 in southwest Connecticut. That’s when I fell in love with the Sox. That and spending a summer in Cambridge when I was 15. The first glimpse of the Green Monster did it.
Manny was also naturalized when he was with the Red Sox, but I try not to mention him.
Mike, get yer butt up to Boston today — Jack Marino speaking at Boston Common, twice I believe.
I’d love to, but all these hot dogs won’t eat themselves!
Jack’s gonna be up in Boston rowsing the rabble? AWESOME!
Very cool news about Bay (he just may, whaddaya say). Love when the Canadians become US citizens — despite giving us Neil Young, dig our neighbors to the north quite a bit.
Also a huge fan of Big Papi’s ESPN commercial where the BoSox mascot catches him trying on the Yankees cap. “Wally, it’s not what you think…”
That would be great to catch Jack up there, he’s a local boy. And then slip on over to The Barking Crab for some steamers and some ice cold Sam Adams.
He and SoCal rabble-rouser Kender “Powder Keg” MacGowan, who also made the trip, are supposed to get interviewed by CBS and others. I’ll forward what I can when they supply the links.
LOL! Both of those guys? OMG! HA! Awesome.
