I saw this article a few days ago, and meant to post about it then. After Saddam Hussein’s capture, the FBI conducted a series of interviews with the toppled dictator. Some of this has been reported on before, but I haven’t seen it all in one place.
In these interviews, Hussein claimed that:
[He] falsely allowed the world to believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction — the main U.S. rationale behind the war — because he feared revealing his weakness to Iran, the hostile neighbor he considered a bigger threat than the U.S.
I would have said “one of the reasons,” but then I’m not an AP writer. So shouldn’t the chant be, “Saddam lied, people died?”
[He did not use] body doubles to avoid detection. “This is movie magic, not reality,” he was quoted as saying in the transcript.
Instead, he said, he evaded enemies by using the telephone just twice in more than a decade and constantly moving from one dwelling to another. He communicated mainly through couriers or met personally with officials.
“He was very aware of the United States’ significant technological capabilities,” the agent wrote in notes after one interview.
Ah, but did he employ android doubles?
He also provided details about the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War following his invasion of Kuwait, reporting that former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III warned Saddam’s then-Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz during a January meeting that if Iraq did not comply with American demands “we’ll take you back to the pre-industrial stage.”
I found this most interesting of all. Seems Saddam had a history of misunderestimating the United States.

People have always had a problem with misunderstanding us. The Japanese honestly thought that we’d fold up after Pearl Harbor. The Germans thought we were only good at making fridges rather than tanks. Osama thought at worst we’d issue some Clinton-era subpoenas after 9/11. And no doubt some damned fool right now is looking at Obama’s group-therapy foreign policy and drawing all sorts of wrong conclusions about us.
” And no doubt some damned fool right now is looking at Obama’s group-therapy foreign policy and drawing all sorts of wrong conclusions about us.”
JS-Don’t you mean, more precisely, the right conclusions about him and the wrong conclusions about us?
I use android body doubles all the time. It’s cheaper than the whole surgery thing.
