I didn't say it was a bad thing, I was just making the observation that it's the music that makes Meet Me in St. Louis great and that the story, like you said is pretty minimal. There are certain musicals for which the story I think is just as powerful as the music and makes the music that much more powerful. Les Mis is one of those. Amazingly powerful story. Sound of Music I think has a story that stands up well on it's own even without the music. Guys and Dolls, MMIS, and musicals like that just use the basic story as an excuse to sing and there's nothing wrong with that.

There are two major differences from your analogy:

1. Mothers are supposed to protect their children. Children aren't yet adults and parents do have to step in, guide and give opinions.
2. Gisele used insulting language and unfairly attacked her husband's teammates.

But it embarrassed the crap out of you, as it should have. In your case your mom didn't really do anything wrong because it's not your job and you're not paid millions to do it (and she could have very well been correct, there are a lot of dumb youth coaches out there).

Gisele should be smart enough to know:

1. Her husband isn't perfect every game and sometimes his receivers save his bacon.
2. Her husband is very dependent on 7 linemen to keep some very huge guys from knocking the snot out of him on every down.
3. Anything she says about her husband or his team has tremendous potential to end up in the media.
4. Cursing is boorish behavior that makes her look small.

Sure, we can understand her frustration, but she ought to have put aside her feelings for what was best for her husband in that circumstance. That was his day. His deal. If he wants to call out the receivers after the game then let him make that decision and live with the consequences. You know this is going to make things difficult for him. Opponents will be chiding him after sacks, "Hey, Tommy, do you need your wife to come out here and protect you." And, whether it's true or not, his receivers have to wonder if Gisele hadn't heard that complaint from Tom himself, and was merely parroting something he said.

I'm just very, very, very tired of famous people (people famous for nothing more than standing in front of a camera and/or repeating lines other people write for them) insulting folks. Can you imagine Staubach's wife dropping f-bombs and insulting Roger's teammates? Bart Starr's wife? Dimaggio had a wife every bit as famous as Brady's. I don't remember her publicly dressing down the Yankees for poor play.

Is it a big deal? No. Is it sign #1,837,426 of how much our culture has slid in the past half century? Yes.

I'll grant you that the story is minimal, but I think it's fun. It's simple family dynamics; the oldest son going off to College and trying to find love, the two oldest daughters trying to land fiances with the two young daughters as comedic foils; all thrown in a tizzy by the threat of having to leave everything they know and love due to their father's job. The passing of the seasons through one year as the whole city prepares for the World's Fair is a nice little plot device also.

It's slight, but "The Music Man" is really just about a guy selling instruments and uniforms in a small town and "Guys and Dolls" is about two guys making a bet. Heck, "Les Miserables" is basically about a guy stealing a loaf of bread! Most musicals have simple plots. It's what happens around the plot that makes them entertaining.

The sheer misfortune that she's with me is usually enough to incite some amount of heckling!

Look, I understand that she was being jeered by some rude fans, and that must be frustrating. But that's got to be a pretty minor difficulty compared with all the advantages of being a professional athlete's wife. About the only thing you have to avoid in that position is insulting your husband's teammates or team management.

Well, I just bing'ed Tom Brady to find out what he earns and I guess his wife is more famous than I thought. She made $45M last year and he made $18. So, I guess maybe that does change her perspective, but I don't think it should. I don't think she'd appreciate Brady insulting photographers or designers she works with. She ought to give him the same consideration, regardless of income.

I spent a day with some parachutists (parachuters?). I was with them as they did their preparation on the ground and then flew with them in the plane for about 5 jumps (although I did not jump). The suits they wore (jump suits?) varied and some had extra material between the arms and torso and more flared legs. Even the folks with minimal extra material could do quite a bit of steering and they were able to join with each other in mid-air in the types of routines I'm sure you've seen.

My guess is these guys got started that way; using jump suits with more and more extra material, until they graduated to base jumping.

I've seen plenty of service members spouses say incredibly stupid and insenistive things in public, even on the INTERNET...can you believe it?

Regarding this I can recall my mom saying things about a coach and a team that I played for that got back to me that just embarassed the crap out of me. My mom was not famous or a supermodel but she loved me and she saw thing through that lens which I am sure is the same lens Gisele is using. SO she did something dumb...being famous doesn't exempt one from that (see POTUS). I honestly don't understand what the big deal is. She said something dumb, move on nothing to see here.

Admiral Lutjens was on the Bismarck. Langsdorff was the captain of the Graf Spee and he shot himself in Buenos Aires. Lutjens died in May of 1941 and I noted that she (Graf Spee) was scuttled not sunk by the British.
